September 7, 2005

Today was a day off.

Unfortuntely the place we are staying is nowhere near any place to eat and it is also a dump. ABB has been using a mixture of good quality motels and lousy places. Today is at the lower end. It is nice to be near the beach but I would rather have to walk a few blocks to get to the beach and have better accomodations.  The lousy places are below acceptable standards. Overall, various riders have experienced bed bugs, disturbing smells, dirty bed sheets, showers that won't drain, among other less than acceptable conditiions.  We all understand the need to keep the cost affordable but at what cost?  There has been continual discussion among the riders. The staff is doing a fantastic job but some parts could use some necessary improvements.  I think this is all part of being a 'pioneer' on a new ride before some of the kinks get worked out.  I wouldn't hold this against ABB as they will work out all these kinks.

We discovered later that there were a few restaurants within 4 or 5 blocks but the motel staff certainly wasn't able to point us in the right direction.

Today I did laundy, cleaned my bike, and other chores.

I've described A Day in the Life of an America By Bicycle Tour ---- Click here: TypicalDay

I've been watching the weather channel. Tropical Storm Ophelia may impact us.

Later in the day, some of the cyclists did a bit of artwork on the beach. While it was cloudy early in the day, it mostly cleared up later.

I took some movies of the ocean -    As I panned the ocean and then the beach, This one is long, about 4 minutes and 10 MB

Mick and Chris stopped and posed for a moment.
