September 6, 2005

Today was an easy day, only 55 miles to North Myrtle Beach. We didn't leave until 9AM after breakfast at the International Waffle House of Whiteville NC. We actually had to face some headwinds today as we headed towards South Carolina. I guess the days of tailwinds have ended.

We headed down Swamp Fox Highway.  The Swamp Fox was of course Francis Marion. He was a South Carolina native who led daring attacks against the British during  the Revolutionary War.  You can read more http://www.americanrevwar.homestead.com/files/MARION.HTM or if you are my age, your probably remember the Disney movie about Francis Marion and don't need a reminder.

We haven't seen many porta-potties while we were in North Carolina. I think they were all out of town for a convention in the town of Guideway NC. Dave wondered:

Have you ever known anyone named Acme?

If not, then how come these porta-potties were stenciled Acme and Sons?

We entered South Carolina.   The 30th state I've cycled in and the 11th of this trip.  So far, I don't see any physical differences between the terrain in NC and SC. Flat roads, narrow or non-existent shoulders, cotton, soybeans, corn, etc.

I continue to see many butterflies. Today I saw a bunch of all-yellow moth-like creatures plus some black butterflieds with a yellow zig-zag pattern across the end of their tails. There was also about a dozen hawks circling over some dead prey in one field.  Besides the butterflies, we have seen hundreds of catapillars crossing the roads.

The staff wanted to take a picture of us facing the other direction - showing the Welcome to North Carolina sign. The sun would then be behind us and give a better photo.  I'm lined up with everyone else, under the NC Sign for another candid shot. They will take several thousand photos during the trip and they are available to to riders on a CD.

Mick's wife Chris is joining us for the last segment of the tour. A friend drove here to Myrtle Beach and since there was a vehicle, 9 of us piled in and headed to a nice Italian Restaurant.  Here Sandy is being serended by the accordian player.  He did play a few chords of I Want to Ride my Bicycle by Queen.

Dave danced along   While Sandy was sereneded
