August 31, 2005

We were lucky today. The rain from Hurricane Katrina went west and north of us. We expected to get rain dumped on us today but most everything worked on our favor. The day from Washington DC to Fredericksburg VA was our first sunny day. There were significant headwinds nearly all day, but more about that later.

A note to my family, who have been emailing me. Yes I know I've made a lot of typo's in my web pages. I'm a pretty good speller but still a lousy typist despite the fact that I sit in front of a computer nearly all day long at work.  You'll have to think of my better qualities rather than my typing skills when you read my web pages.  Besides I've ridden a bike all day long before I begin typing.  How is that for a lousy excuse?

We left DC, exiting the city from the back side of the Lincoln Memorial.  We then took the bike path along the Potomic River towards Alexandria. We exited the path before reaching Mount Vernon.

I've noticed butterflies nearly every day of the trip. I've been unable to capture any of them with the camera. I must have seen at least 5 or 6 different species - some of which I've never seen before. One nearly all blue winged creature.  Much of the country side has wild daisys.

I've panned around the daisys. This movie of the daisys is fairly large:

In the town of Occoquan we rode past the Pink Bicycle Tea Shop. Unfortunately it was closed.

Most of the day we followed, Virginia Bike Route #1.  I stopped for a piece of pizza in the shop on the corner. I hadn't seen the cue painted on the road, our lunch stop was less than 300 yards to the left of the intersection.

At lunch I took a couple of movies to capture the strength of the headwinds.

I was expecting to see the Fredericksburg Civil War battlefield on the way into town today. I didn't - so maybe tomorrow morning on the way out of town.

At dinner tonight, Sarah mentioned that her Mom and some of her friends were reading my web site. She said they would recognize her since she has a fork in her hand - I was too late to get a photo with her plate of cheese fries.
