September 12, 2005

Today we had no turns, once we got out of Savannah. Basically we rode about 70 miles on Highway 17. Parts of 17 were 4-lane and other 2-lane. Portions have a reasonable shoulder and other portions had a bike lane. Mostly it was just boring. Tomorrow looks to be more of the same.

One portion billed itself as the Liberty Trail. We stopped at the first SAG near Midway Georgia to discover a plaque for Lyman Hall, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.  More about the Liberty Trail here: http://www.libertytrail.com/ or  http://www.ourcoast.com/attractions/libertytrail.shtml and more about Dr Lyman Hall here http://www.colonialhall.com/hall/hall.php

DR. LYMAN HALL

DR. LYMAN HALL WAS A GEORGIA SIGNER OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. HE REPRESENTED SAINT JOHN'S PARISH IN THE CONTINENTAL CONGRESS, AND WAS A DELEGATE FROM GEORGIA TO THE SECOND CONTINENTAL CONGRESS MEETING IN PHILADELPHIA.

HE WAS A FOUNDER OF SUNBURY AND AS GOVERNOR OF GEORGIA (1783-1784) HE GAVE STRONG SUPPORT TO EDUCATION AND RELIGION. HE WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN OBTAINING THE GRANT OF LAND WHICH LED TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA.

BORN IN WALLINGFORD, CONNECTICUT, APRIL 12, 1724, DR. HALL MOVED TO SAINT JOHN'S PARISH WHERE HE PURCHASED THE PLANTATION NOW KNOWN AS HALL'S KNOLL. HE BECAME A LEADING PHYSICIAN, PLANTER, PATRIOT, AND WAS ACTIVE IN MERCANTILE AND SHIPPING CIRCLE IN SUNBURY.

DR. HALL DIED IN 1790 AND WAS BURIED ON HIS PLANTATION AT SHELL BLUFF LANDING IN BURKE COUNTY. IN 1848, HIS REMAINS WERE RE-INTERRED IN AUGUSTA, BENEATH THE GRANITE OBELISK, "THE SIGNERS' MONUMENT."

Nearby I walked down a dirt road into the swamp. Despite riding between rows of pine trees along a blacktop surface in the sun, just a few feet of the road there is a quite different life going on.

There was one place along the road that bills itself as the smallest church in America.  Riders who have previously done the northern route said there is another smallest church in Vermont.  There is a list of notable small churchs in America here http://www.roadsideamerica.com/set/church.html

We stopped for lunch in a small town and to get out of the sun. Today was our first hot day.  About 1/2 mile from the motel, we came across an apartment complex that had a sprinkler running and watering some plants.  We stopped immediately and ran through the sprinkers screaming like little kids. It was fantastic... the best part of the day!!!!
