The last day of riding was 53 miles from Kenansville to Surf City. On all the other days, we had generally taken our time and stopped to have fun along the way. We often got to camp near the end of the group of 1200 riders around 3:30PM. This day was different, we finished around noon. The day was totally flat.
The route description for the day:
It’s the last day and you’ve survived 6 days of riding through the Western North Carolina Mountains, the North Carolina foothills, the "gently" rolling hills of the Uwharrie National Forest, through cotton fields, tobacco farms, wineries back country roads and now, when you thought you just couldn’t go any further, you experience today’s route. The route will follow some of the flattest roads you’ll experience during the entire ride. The biggest hill you have to climb will be that tar strip winding its way across the road. Best of all, you’ll have the wind at your back. Get ready to put your head down and crank out some wattage. It’s the last day so enjoy the very low traffic counts, the open road, and the ever increasing presence of salt in the air as you make your last few pedals of the week entering into Surf City. Congratulations, you just finished 7 days and more than 400 miles of riding across the beautiful State of North Carolina.
Once again, we gathered to ride. On most mornings, Carol, Jeff, and Darwin left before the rest of us. This day was a sunny and warm day. The temperatures was in the mid 80s.

The day was flat and there were not any interesting places to stop. Cal did find time for one more Snickers bar. Everyone was scattering after the ride. Some were heading directly home by car; others taking the bus to Cary for a flight home; and others were heading to other adventures. We had a couple of hours to have lunch in Surf City, take a dip in the ocean; and say goodbye until next year.
