The fifth day of riding was 58 miles from Sanford to Dunn. Highlight of the day was the Averaboro Battlefield Museum. Lowlight of the day was the washerboard road to Raven Rock State Park which we had to traverse in the opposite direction after leaving the park. For the most part, the roads in NC were in good condition with very few potholes. We did ride on quite a few chip-n-seal roads in the easterm part of the state but for the most part, good roads far outnumbered the others.
The route description for the day:
This day’s route will take rider’s east to a town that’s no stranger to Cycle North Carolina, Dunn. As the route heads out of town, you’ll enjoy more of the great back roads that North Carolina has to offer. We’ll pass through the small town of Broadway and on to our first stop at the Raven Rock State Park. While you’re there, spend some time at the park and let nature refresh your spirit. We’ll continue east through the towns of Lillington, Buies Creek and Campbell University, and the small Town of Erwin where you can find the largest and small pair of blue jeans. Before heading into Dunn, the route will make its final stop at the Averasboro Battlefield Museum and Memorial. We wind our way through town, passing the General William C. Lee Museum and finishing into the overnight campsite at Tart Recreation Park. One more day down, two more to go.
There were abandoned barns nearly daily on the route.

We passed several tobacco farms. The tobacco is cut by hand.

In addition to tobacco, we passed cotton fields. The cotton was not quite ready for harvest.

Averasboro Battlefield Museum. This battle was in mid-March 1865 where Sherman's march was briefly slowed down. There was one more battle before Lee surrendered in early April.

Cemetery. Although the tombstones are replicas to avoid damage to the originals by vandalism.

An unusal treat at dinner. Can you guess? Deep Fried Dill Pickles.
