The second day of riding was 56 miles from Lenoir to Statesville.  We were not at the higher altitiudes but had more climbing than the first day.  Unfortunately my camera was missing for two days and I have no photos to share.

The route description for the day:

You’ll need to stretch your legs, grab a good bite to eat, fill your water bottles and prepare yourself for another epic ride. We’re not quite out of the mountains, but the rolling hills of the Piedmont aren’t far away. Today’s route will travel east offering you some amazing mountain views as we wind our way through the valleys of the Brushy Mountain range. About half way into the route, we’ll pass through the Town of Hiddenite, which is home to the Emerald Hollow Mine, the only emerald mine in the United States open to the public for prospecting. Before arriving into Statesville, we’ll pass right by Fort Dobbs Historic Site. Fort Dobbs is North Carolina’s only French and Indian War (1754-1763) state historic site and among just a few in the United States. Take the opportunity to stop in and learn about this unique war site.

Fort Dobbs was an interesting site to explore. http://www.fortdobbs.org/  The director told us the history of the fort and the surrounding area. It was clear that she loved talking about history.
