The first day of riding was 59 miles from Blowing Rock to Lenoir. The first part of the route was on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We climbed from about 3500 feet to 4400 feet and then after a few miles of riding descended to 1100 feet. I exchanged my usual Ultegra derailleur and cassette for an XT mountain bike deraillerur and 11-34 cassette. I was glad to have that gearing this week.
The route description for the day:
You better get a sound night of sleep before you hit day one of the 2009 CNC Fall Ride. The route feature breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, valleys, towns, waterfalls, and so much more. This year we will feature two routes for cyclists to ride. The Blue Ridge Parkway route features a steady climb up to 4400 ft and features a number of scenic overlooks, the Lin Cove Viaduct and just the opportunity to see the Parkway from a bicycles point of view. Traffic will be minimal, but the scenic views will be in abundance. Those riders who will be riding the alternate route will not be disappointed. This route will wind its way along some great mountain roads, offering riders an easier option on over the Parkway route. Both routes will pass through the quaint Town of Linville, paying off to an 11 mile gradual decent down the mountain offering riders a chance to rest the legs and enjoy the scenery. Once down the mountain, it’s a straight shot to Lenoir with the foothills lingering on the next day’s route. Either way, the first day will be remembered as one of the best biking days during CNC ever.

It was cloudy but did not rain.
