Like many state rides, this tour takes a different route each year. In 1999, the route was Daytona Beach - DeLand - Mount Dora - Inverness - Crystal River - Ocala - Gainesville.
It was spring and I was anxious to be on my bike.
The ride was poorly organized. I learned that Florida led the nation in cycling fatalities. Florida does not seem to have a secondary or county road system so much of the route was on state roads. Shoulders were narrow and often had rumble strips. Automobile drivers threw beer bottles at us on several occasions.
The ride was run by Florida State tourist bureau employees rather than cyclists and thus suffered.
I hear from others that the quality of this ride has considerably improved since 1999.
