Bike The Drive started in 2002. The ride is sponsored by the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation. www.chibikefed.org

One day a year, Lake Shore Drive is closed to vehicles early morning from sunrise to 9:30AM. In 2003 the ride was on Father's Day.
Riders lined up in Grant Park waiting for sunrise and OK to start riding. The ride started in Grant Park and headed south along South Shore Drive to the Museum of Science and Industry Campus. At that time, it looped back north past Grant Park to the Foster exit where the route looped back South to Grant Park. I rode the south loop once and the northern loop twice before the Drive was opened to vehicles again.
Riders waiting to start.
Heading south. South Shore Drive had been under construction. Construction was completed sufficiently a couple of days prior to the ride. We were riding on new pavement for most of the southern loop.

Looking east towards Navy Pier as the sun rises.
Crossing over the Chicago River.
Looking south down Lake Shore Drive with a nice view of the Hancock Building.

After the ride, I went south on the bike path to the steps of the Field Museum to get these photos of the Chicago skyline.
The ride was on Father's Day. I spent the rest of the day with my kids.
